After Hours: Pokémon Go is cool.. but..

There’s too much talk of Pokémon Go not only on Facebook, it’s flooding my LinkedIn feeds too.

Augmented reality has been around for quite a number of years now, just never really been used this way, albeit riding on the brand equity Pokémon built up, but I’m not here to talk about Pokémon because tech wise, I’m just not that impressed as compared to Night Terrors.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m waiting to “catch ’em all” too. Though not like it’s going to be available to us anytime soon.

But let’s talk about Night Terrors instead. Now, this game is developed by Novum Analytics, and they just released their beta version 2 months ago. They’ve received 12,000 likes on Game Connection Development Awards 2016’s Facebook page and various nominations for Night Terrors, tremendous number of likes for the game’s trailer on Youtube. Using four major algorithms, environmental mapping and binaural audio (which is like the surround sound for earphones), Novum Analytics might have created the ultimate survival horror game.


You’ll get to play this game in the comfort of your own home, after dark, with the lights turned off and your headphones on (for the 360° audio experience). The game maps out your home and creates photorealistic augmented reality experience as you walk around the house trying to save a girl. This is your chance to bring out the hero or heroine in you.

Just like starring in your very own horror movie!

I can only describe it in so many words, watch the game trailer at the link below and you’ll understand what I mean when I say “impressively horrific augmented reality experience” or simply “sh*t-in-pants-scary”.

Alright, I’m getting to the point!

I’m not here to promote the game and I’m probably a noob gamer at best, will probably never have the balls to try this game (probably watch Pewdiepie play it instead), but the marketer in me is screaming about the possibilities.

Do you see how this might be an answer to saving our brick and mortar stores? Our malls? If catching Pokémon can get people out and about, how about collecting coins, credits, discounts, vouchers, samples etc.? Gamify the whole physical shopping experience (men, imagine a world where your other half is happy you’re walking around the mall playing the game rather than sitting there watching her buy shoes).


Think about it, if Night Terrors has the ability to make pictures “fall off the wall” on your screen, can it not suggest items according to the consumer’s taste or buying behaviour, or point out something that’s on sale? Have the item jiggle around, let the consumer bag it and get a discount at the cashiers. There’s something to think about.

And like everything regarding technology, the opportunities are only as limited as one’s imagination.
